Mokuhanga is a water based approach to woodblock printing that developed in Japan and was widely popularized during the Edo period (1603-1867). The mokuhanga process involves carving blocks with traditional hand tools, inking the block with water based pigments or sumi ink, and printing on Eastern style papers (gampi, kozo, mitsumata, hemp, etc.) by hand with a traditional baren. 

This particular print was made from 11 impressions of four different hand carved woodblocks. Unlike digital prints, mokuhanga woodblock prints are individually inked and printed by hand for each impression. For this reason they are considered a multiple original and are NOT a reproduction.
